OMUA plans to host a very special art activism event in Ackerman Grand Ballroom on November 19th, 7:00-9:00 PM. The theme of the evening will be overcoming adversity with the aid of art and storytelling. We are proud to feature a variety of student performers and guest speaker Dwayne Carl, US veteran and author of the book "Out of My Second Closet". He will be speaking about his experience as a gay man in the military, rape, homelessness, confronting his AIDS diagnosis, and how he reclaimed his identity and became a community activist.
You can also view his video featured on Through Positive Eyes.
There will also be a lineup of student performances including a capella, contemporary dance, spoken word poetry, instrumental music, and photography. This promises to be an emotionally engaging and inspirational night. Everyone is invited to attend, and admission is free. Complimentary beverages will be provided. There is no dress code.
We hope to see you there! Please RSVP via our Facebook event page, and as always, email us if you have any questions or comments!
***UPDATE*** David Lyons, UCLA medical student and US veteran, will also be attending with his husband and speaking about his experience serving in the military before the repeal of DADT. Look forward to hearing from him as well!
