A huge musical thank you to everyone who came out last Thursday to our karaoke session at the VA with the residents. There were smiles all around, good-natured laughs, and a few surprises regarding who had the vocals and musical knowledge. If that wasn't enough time spent together, there was a group who went out to eat poke in Westwood afterwards. What a nice way to close out Week 5!
This past Thursday, we had the honor of having World War II veteran, Noboru "Don" Seki, come speak with us about his experience witnessing Pearl Harbor, fighting in Company L of the highly decorated 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and his life post-war. He is a highly distinguished veteran having individually earned the Bronze Star, the French National Legion of Honor, and the Purple Heart. Despite facing racial and disability discrimination, Don worked in tandem with his wife, Sumiko, post-war to raise awareness and protect the legacy of Japanese Americans both interned and who fought during World War II. Their efforts aided in establishing a National Monument in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles dedicated to the Japanese American World War II soldiers. It was such a pleasure having the opportunity to meet him and hear his story.
Last Thursday, November 17th, our club had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Delany Thrasher come speak to us about her career and experience working at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Operation Mend. She talked about what it means to be involved in UCLA's unique family oriented Operation Mend program and specifically how neuropsychology plays an integral part in the cognitive assessment and evaluation of patients.
Thank you Dr. Thrasher for coming out to speak with us and bringing along your special guest!
For one of our general meetings, we were lucky enough to have our education committee set up a rotation of stations for our members to gain hands-on experience in attaining blood pressure, treating for shock, tying a tourniquet, and suturing. Thank you Education Co-Chairs, Jake and Clarence, and Robert for organizing everything!
Our Spring 2016 retreat was a memorable one with everyone getting a tour of the USS Sampson in San Diego, followed by walking around Old Town, a side beach trip, and then brunch at The Tractor Room before heading home. Thank you to everyone who made it out, especially before the craziness of midterms hit!
Last Monday, April 4th, we had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Juan E. Rose III, a representative from the Travis Manion Foundation. He spoke of not only the foundation's empowerment programs for veterans and families of fallen service members but also of our own personal motivations and actions as individuals. The foundations strives to spread the personal motto of First Lieutenant Travis Manion, "If not me, then who".
Thank you all for coming out, and, of course, thank you to our speaker!

Today we had the opportunity to introduce four medical students to the Operation Mend Undergraduate Association. A panel was conducted so the medical students could share their insight and life stories to the undergraduates. This QA was really helpful for those aspiring to get into the health field and learning about the application process in general. We hope everyone enjoyed our special guests this week!
Today the topic of choice was PTSD and TBI and the impact they have on returning veterans. We hope everyone learned a thing or two at the end of meeting. More than 20% of veterans who return from war experience PTSD, which is a significant number. Again, we would like to thank Catherine and Tan for their great presentations on PTSD and TBI. Additionally, at the end of the day, we played jeopardy. We hope it was fun and engaging as well.
